The warp yarns to create face pile.

Area rugs were originally considered to be valued property, this was made clear in literature from 6th century Persia. The variety of different styles, patterns, unique designs and detail work put into creating them, would determine there value. The hand-knotted rugs is one of the more highly priced, and it is also the most popular styles of weaving today. It is current spreading throughout the Orient, making Persia one of the larges manufacture of area rugs.Coincidentally hand-knotted rugs was one of the last styles of weaving to come about, there are a number of different style and patterns of area rugs. Many of the different styles, patterns and technique use to create them will be discuss in the following paragraphs. Area rugs designing styles such as, handmade, machine made, pile weave, flat weave, hand tufted, hand hooked and so on.Handmade - Handmade rugs, use three major techniques when the are being created, flat weave, pile weave and hand-tufted. Handmade is sometime referred to as hand knotted, has a custom-created unique design, with a skillful use of color combined with exceptional details. The creator would make their own natural dyes and add details that would represent there own communities and home town distinctiveness.Hand Tufted - Hand tufted are created without knots in the foundation, the height is determined by the amount of Air Textured Yarn that gets trimmed. This process goes a lot quicker than the hand knot method, but it requires a lot more creativity and attention to detail. It is also more affordable than hand-knotted and is able to with stand foot traffic for years.Pile Weave - These rugs are created on weaving loom machine that ties knots to create the pattern. The different weaving groups use a diverse types of knots, and every single one is tied by hand, and can include anywhere from 25 to 1000 knots per square inch.Flat Weave - This is where the knots are created on a surface that use flat warp, the strands are used as the foundation as well as weft strands used in the foundation and also in the patterns.WarpIs a vertical strands of fiber that stretches from the top end to the bottom end of the rug, knots are tied to the warp yarns to create face pile.WeftThe horizontal threads interlaced through the warp in a woven fabric.Asymmetrical and Symmetrical Knot - These knots are used mainly in Iran, India, Egypt and China, yarn that wrapped around one warp strand and then passed under the nearest warp strand. This is the brought back to the surface creating a finer weave usually used in Turkey.Knot Density - It is created by tying knots on to the warp strands, two prime types of knots, asymmetrical and symmetrical. The density depends on the number of knots per square inch, also referred to as KPSI or the square decimeter in a handmade rug. It is measured in the imperial system in square inches and in the metric system in square decimeters. KPSI is sometimes used to point out the value, the higher the number of knots per square inch, the higher the quality, the more expensive it is.Tibetan Knot - Tibetan Knot is another type of rug-weaving technique now used in other countries along with Tibet. A temporary rod is put in front of the warp, this is to verify the length of the pile. An unbroken yarn is looped around two warps and then once around the rod. Then when a row of loops is finished, the loops are cut to create the pile, producing a slightly ridged surface.Hand Hooked - This rug-making yarn is insert into a backing with a hand held single-needle or tufting tool. The machine is often called a "gun", the rug's pattern are stenciled on the initial backing material. The tufting is then completed, and the backing is attached to protect and anchor the stitches. The pile of a hand hooked rug is made up of loops, where as a hand tufted has a cut pile surface. Rugs sometimes may combine the cut and loop method, this has a total cut pile appearance.Machine Tufting - Machine tufting is some what similar to the hand tufted technique and was developed in the United States. The yarn ends are placed into a backing some what similar to a sewing machine and is equipped with hundreds of needles. These tufting machinery are usually 12 or 15 feet wide, and it is used to make most of the rugs in the U.S. that are tufted. However most of the machine tufted rugs are distributed all over from numerous different commercial manufactures today.
